South Shore Center Partial

South Shore Center, Alameda, CA

In 1998 Kathryn Shaffer was an assistant planner for the redevelopment of South Shore Center in Alameda, California while working for another architectural firm in San Francisco. Part of the project involved adding an additional 23,500 square foot building to an existing 23 acre site with (at that time) a Mervyns, Penneys, Safeway, Woolworths, Walgreens, Ross, and Lucky supermarket.

Originally a neighborhood mall built on landfill in a lagoon in the fifties, this project involved extensive site study to meet municipal parking requirements and traffic engineering. The plan was the create a community center with walking and seating areas and a public center area for seasonal activities.
