In 1994, working for Robert Lamb Hart, Kathryn Shaffer continued her work on the Rancho San Carlos project and assisted in the redesign of the existing Hacienda into visitor accomodations, the design of a new Spanish Colonial style guest house with 7-10 rooms, and the design of a new Ranch Center. This site plan at left, a team effort with others in the firm overlaid on Google Satellite Maps,  shows how the Hacienda, together with the new Ranch Center was to create a sense of place, backing onto Las Gazas Creek (at the bottom of the page). The Hacienda

Update:  The Santa Lucia Preserve project was later awarded the Nathaniel A. Owings Award for Environmental Excellence sponsored by the California Architectural Foundation (CAF) in 2008 and a Merit Award by the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2003
