Planned Development

Rancho San Carlos

Santa Lucia Preserve (aka Rancho San Carlos)

The Ranch Center (aka Lot 258)

In 1994, prior to starting the firm, Kathryn Shaffer was invited back to architect Robert Lamb Hart's office in San Francisco to co-design the "center" of a new RLH Planned Urban Development on 20,000 acres: Rancho San Carlos (aka Santa Lucia Preserve).

The Ranch Center, based on her experience designing pedestrian oriented shopping centers in New York, included guest housing, cafe & cafe court, meeting rooms, art gallery & library, real estate sales office and shops with employee housing above just large enough to serve the planned housing community.

Update:  These designs and drawings of the Hacienda and The Ranch Center were included in the Santa Lucia Preserve Project Final Environmental Impact Report, 94-005, 9-14-95, prepared by Jones & Stokes and approved by Monterey County.
