Historical Research

Charles W. & John A. Shaver Architects (Shaver Group) completed the award winning Valley Winds Elementary School in St. Louis County, MO (a.k.a. Koch Elementary) and in 1965 it won awards for it's innovative design. * It was published in the Nation's Schools, December 1965 and named The Nation's School of the Year. Shaver was known as the first American architect to develop permanent membrane architecture that made constructing this shape of school possible.

One of Shaffer's employers during her internship, Leslie V. Appleby, had  worked for Shaver during this project and created construction drawings.

Known as the "snail school".

Shaffer is currently working on a book on the evolution of school architecture
