Syracuse Lakefront

Shortly after passing the architectural licensing exam in 1989 in Connecticut and becoming NCARB certified, owner Kathryn Shaffer was Design Architect at Dal Pos Associates where one of her projects were the buildings and planning of Syracuse Lakefront based on an RTKL driven design. Decribed in a 1988 ICSC marketing brochure for Carousel Center:

"Syracuse Lakefront - the 700 prime city acres on the shores of Onondaga Lake - is undergoing a bold transformation. What was formerly an area of heavy industry is poised to become a comprehensive waterfront complex on a grand scale. Through the combined impetus provided by The Pyramid Companies and The City of Syracuse, and guided by the renowned waterfront architect RTKL, designer of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the Lakefront will be a careful blend of retail development, a modern office park, cluster housing, a light industrial zone, a renovated historic distric and hotel and recreational facilities, all centered around a marina and greenbelt park network."*

In 2001, Shaffer went on to work as Design Coordinator for the expansion and development of a similar Walker Moody AIA urban entertainment center that was built in the 1960s: Pier 39, in San Francisco.

Today, one of the specialties of the firm is the planning and design of Urban Entertainment Centers with a special interest in industrial waterfront reclamation and reuse.
